The Long-Awaited Return...

Sunday 5-17

Morning tea as per usual, followed by time tending the garden. Today is the beginning of Carl rehearsals. As I prepare for a summer harvest I am reflecting on the path ahead.

A performance with Carl is a deep, public meditation. In this process ideas are captured and displayed, only for them to vanish into the ether moments later. Carl pursues the raw, pure, unrefined, essence of the ongoing creation miracle. We aim to touch the prime mystery as best we can and walk away still with our minds intact. This is a quite volatile and delicate process as can be expected. We do not know how it will turn out and we can be sure that what happens in each performance will not happen again. In this we honor the eternal now and hopefully may bring others along.

“This is not real music,” is a refrain I’ve contended with quite a bit when facing reaction to the audacity of Carl. It seems offensive to players and listeners alike that we would dare create music that is unpredictable and unusual and claim it divine. Though I am occasionally dismayed by this sentiment I am none the less undeterred. It seems to me that when one receives push back on a creative project, that is indicative of a need to press on.

And so, press on we shall…

Long live.
